FEATURE NEWS:
Wire shaving technology
Mouton has improved on the original wire shaving concept it developed some 20 years ago and the result is the new shaving head TR 02 (2006).
It is designed with a higher rigidity and uses materials with high anti-vibration properties. However it remains true to its early principles – ease of use and a reasonable cost – which have built its reputation among users worldwide.
The company will also introduce at wire 2006 a brand new universal machine dedicated to the reconditioning of shaving dies: the MU 210.
Mouton’s experience has shown that, particularly for steel, good shaving is obtained through the perfect alignment of all the tools, a very high rigidity of the complete shaving head and the ability to eliminate the micro-vibrations at the level of the shaving tool.
Mouton has taken these factors into account in the design of the new shaving head. Thanks to the alignment of all the tools, from the entry die to the exit die through the guide and the shaving die, the axial deviation does not exceed one-
or two-hundredths of a millimetre. This allows a concentric shaving.
As Mouton also manufactures machines and tools, it has been able to develop the use of suitable carbide grades and profiles specific to shaving dies which can answer the needs of each user, according to the speed and thickness of shaving
but especially to materials (ferrous or non-ferrous) as well as to the diameter of the wire to be shaved.
For more than 20 years, Mouton has gained experience in metal wire shaving, with trials on over 50 types of materials. These include: ferrous metals (high-carbon steel, stainless steel, spring steel) and non-ferrous metals (copper, brass, aluminium, nickel, silver, precious metal alloys).
Mouton has also developed a range of shaving tools perfectly suited to each type of shaved material as experiments have shown that the results can be very different according to the type of shaved material, especially for the harder ones. The company comments: “We see the application of our shaving technology as a partnership between us and the client.”
Mouton believes that many drawing companies have drawing benches in their premises that they do not really use. That is the reason why Mouton has designed
two types of shaving equipment:
Depending on the wire diameter and material, Mouton has the shaving head TR 01 (up to 5mm) or TR 02 (from 5mm).
Experience shows that shaving tools are at the heart of the shaving machine: it is the key factor for success and profitability in shaving. For this reason Mouton has concerned itself with tools and maintenance in order to reduce the running cost of the shaving machines.
The company says: “Other companies have developed shaving machines in the last thirty years, but no-one has designed a machine specially dedicated to the maintenance of shaving tools. We have manufactured grinding machines to recondition drawing dies for more than 40 years and now we are unveiling a brand new universal machine dedicated to the reconditioning of shaving dies: the MU 210.”
This machine has two grinding heads, one internal and one external, both equipped with diamond grinding wheels.
The MU 210 is also equipped with automatic advances and adjustable reciprocating motion which enables it to grind under cooling liquid tungsten carbide or steel parts with very precise tolerances.
For example, a shaving die diameter 7mm having scales on the front face after shaving can be reground on the face by 0.5mm; in this case, the internal diameter will only increase by one- to two-hundredths of a millimetre.
This will not have an influence on the final wire diameter as this one is calibrated by the exit drawing die of the shaving head.
This machine also enables the shaving diameter to be changed according to the client’s needs. Mouton asserts: “This new machine enables customers to achieve the optimal return on their shaving investment thanks to the multi-use of shaving dies. And, of course, the grinding machine MU 210 also enables the grinding of any type of tungsten carbide drawing die
from 1–20mm.”
Considering the specificity of shaving, and in order to develop and optimize its own shaving technology, Mouton invested in a shaving research and development centre 10 years ago located at its premises in the south-east of France.
The company says: “This shaving centre enables us to carry on with technological developments, as well as undertaking trials with wires on behalf of clients who want to invest in shaving – the results make them conscious of the improvements shaving can bring to their product and therefore to their own clients.”
