Descaling

At wire 2006 Plasmabull Engineering will be presenting a new dry descaling process for steel wire, rod and strip. PlasmaDescaler can be used as an alternative to acid pickling, brushing, sanding or shot blasting.

PlasmaDescaler is designed to work in conjunction with a mechanical descaler (wire bending) and operates inline with the drawing machine. Wire or rod is first processed with the mechanical descaler. Then it is led directly through PlasmaDescaler where the remaining scale is cleaned from the surface.

Plasma converts scale and oxides back into raw material – steel. Plasma treatment results in no loss of the steel base material, as scale and oxides turn back into iron. The only by-product of plasma descaling is water vapour. This makes plasma treatment an environmentally friendly process with no dust or acid contamination.

Plasma treatment activates the steel surface to allow better adhesion of the drawing lubricant. PlasmaDescaler prepares the wire surface for direct application of drawing lubricant, with no need for carriers such as phosphate or borax. PlasmaDescaler is installed directly between the mechanical descaler and the drawing machine.

PlasmaDescaler improves drawing line utilisation and reduces die maintenance, which is a result of complete deoxidation of the wire surface. Plasma processing costs are low compared to acid pickling and mechanical brushing. The process can be used for high and low carbon steels as well as other metals.

Plasmabull is an Austrian supplier of dry surface cleaning and descaling machinery for wire, tube and strip applications. The development and marketing of Plasmabull technology is supported by a group of partners: Plasmait GmbH, TKT Group SA and the Niedermair Group.
