SETIC Gauder Group
The SETIC division of the Gauder Group has been a key partner in the making of superconductor cables for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) particle accelerator. The LHC is being built in a tunnel 27km in circumference buried around 50 to 150m underground. It straddles the Swiss and French borders on the outskirts of Geneva. The planned start-up date is 2007.
The LHC is designed to collide two counter rotating beams of protons or heavy ions. Proton-proton collisions are predicted to produce energy of 7 TeV per beam (1 TeV – Tera electron Volts –is equivalent to 1012 electron Volts).
The facts and figures surrounding this project are quite boggling. Just two examples: the combined strands of the superconducting cable being produced for the LHC would go around the equator almost 7 times. And: if you added all the filaments of the strands together they would stretch to the sun and back 5 times with enough left over for a few trips to the moon.
SETIC has supplied 3 planetary stranders specially adapted to the production of superconductor cable. Thanks to involvement in this special mission, SETIC says it has acquired a real expertise in several fields: bobbin preparation, tension regulation, and guiding of the superconductor elements. Sales Manager Christian Pavailler says: "Due to the extremely high cost of the cables, the planetary stranders had to be very reliable, producing full lengths in one continuous, totally maintenance-free, run. Then, the development of dedicated supervision software enabled the perfect follow-up of the production conditions."
