FEATURE NEWS:
Rosendahl’s advances in forming and welding
With the advancements made in metal forming and longitudinal welding in recent years many new applications have come up for this technology. Originally the technology was designed for the manufacturing of inner and outer conductors for RF-cable where it’s important to have perfect forming without periodical influences (to keep electrical parameters voltage/standing/wave/ratio (VSWR) at desired levels).
The corrugation process for that application required high productivity (equipment designed for up to 8000rpm) and perfect quality.
Rosendahl has since developed a line configuration which it says surpasses existing quality and productivity levels. In addition to
the forming, welding and corrugation equipment there is a measuring gauge that allows the online checking of the contours
of the corrugated product.
Parameters like major overall diameter (OD), minor OD and corrugation pitch are measured with a resolution of 0.01mm in the X and Y axis. With this device, in-line quality control and process set-up are made very easy.
The experience gathered from RF-cable manufacturing has also been applied to,
for example, the forming of aluminium and steel tapes with multi-stage roll formers for high and medium voltage cable armouring and shielding.
Aluminium, copper and steel tapes are longitudinally welded and corrugated to provide a seal and to give the required flexibility for this type of cable. Other fields for this application are copper cladding of aluminium rods and steel rods for CCA and CCS wire manufacturing as well as submarine optical fibre cable manufacturing with longitudinally welded copper tapes.
