X-ray technology for insulating and jacketing lines

Sikora’s X-RAY 2000 is an on-line measuring and control system for insulating and jacketing lines. The technology provides continuous measurements on the diameter, ovality, wall thickness and eccentricity of the cable under production. The system is particularly focused on process optimi-sation. It achieves this, the company says, through: • reduction of start-up scrap • reduction of material over-consumption • provision of permanent quality control.

X-rays transilluminate the cable and the resulting picture is directly projected onto a high-resolution line sensor. Measuring values are continuously available within fractions of a second.

The advantages are numerous says Sikora: “The X-RAY 2000 gives fast centring of the crosshead directly after start-up, continuous measurement and control of the extrusion line and it can be used on round and sector shaped conductors and sheathing/jacketing. It is a significant development for insulating and jacketing lines, where tight tolerances, production, quality control and economical aspects of the cable are all important.”
