| Specialising in the development and design of semi-conductor peeling and stripping tools, as well as equipment for preparing power cables for mounting terminations and joints, Hivotech Ltd, Switzerland, has recently introduced its Piccolo and Pico series of water-test terminations. The Piccolo series is principally designed for routine testing of medium-voltage cables of up to 60kV, as well as conductor cross-sections of up to 1,200mm2. The Pico series is designed for cables of up to 36kV and a maximum conductor cross-section of 630mm2. Both Piccolo and Pico series feature all the advantages of conventional water terminations, while being much more compact, with no separate water conditioner needed. The new series� main benefits include: - Easy operation: the process water is not under pressure, therefore no sealing is needed; - Compact design: the termination and the water conditioner are integrated into one unit; - Reliable for PD testing: water is an excellent medium for a reliable interface with the surface of the cable; - Clean: as there is no oil, silicon grease or semicon paint involved, it helps to keep the test room clean and safe. The terminal itself features an inner and an outer insulating tube. The water around the cable and in-between the tubes provide resistive grading of the electric field, thus avoiding partial discharges on the surface of the cable insulation or the termination. The termination is attached to the water conditioning unit. The water is pumped through a resin filter, making it highly resistive. The conditioning unit also contains a heat exchanger, which cools the water conditioner without pressure. Therefore, the cable under test is not required to be sealed against the outside. The cable-end with a plug attached at its end is simply inserted into the termination until the plug connects to the high-voltage electrode. The complete unit is provided with a mobile base.
