| Using the unique PCVD (Plasma activated Chemical Vapour Deposition) process guaranteeing an extremely high-profile accuracy in the core region, Draka Fibre Technology, The Netherlands, offers multimode fibres that feature the best quality bandwidth available. The company produces two types of multimode fibre: 50m and 62.5m. To further support low-cost, short reach 10Gbit/s connectivity, Draka Fibre Technology, has developed a new 850nm laser optimised 50m multimode fibre for an extended reach of 550m applications: MaxCap 550 multimode fibre. These applications are in particular LAN backbones, Storage Area Networks (SAN) and central office connections. MaxCap 550 is the latest addition of the Draka MaxCap range. In 2001 the MaxCap 300 and MaxCap 150 were introduced with considerable success. These original MaxCap fibres were ideal for many distances typically encountered in the premises market. However, there was still a need to extend this low-cost, high-performance multimode solution to longer backbones (building and campus environment).
The MaxCap 550 fibre fully supports 850nm serial 10Gbit/s applications over 550m. An effective modal bandwidth (EMB) of 4,700MHz/km at 850nm under laser launch is ensured by means of 850nm DMD specification. The overfilled launch bandwidth of the MaxCap 550 fibre at 850nm is ≥ 3,500MHz/km. This overfilled launch bandwidth performance gives strong support to legacy applications. The MaxCap 550 multimode fibre offers a smooth, low-cost migration path for premises backbone cabling from 10Mbit/s up to 10Gbit/s over 550m. The fibre is also equipped with an excellent micro-bending sensitivity reducing coating, DLPC9, which results in easy cabling and installation, supporting the maximum cabled attenuation at 850nm of 3.0dB/km.
Apart from standard multimode fibres, Draka Fibre Technology also offers an exceptionally high-quality class: HiCap multimode fibres. These optical fibres are available with core diameters of 50m and 62.5m. They are particularly suitable for data systems operating at a transmission speed of 1,000Mbit/s (Gigabit-Ethernet). As part of the HiCap family, the HiCapXS is optimised for performance in the 1300nm area. It therefore supports the new IEEE 802.3ah standard aiming at the Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) architecture for graded-index multimode fibres and guaranteeing an 1Gbit/s speed over 550m.
