| Nextrom, Switzerland, one of the world's premier suppliers of manufacturing solutions and services to the fibre optic industry, has recently introduced its new OFC 06 soot deposition system that has been designed to fabricate preforms from synthetic glass made directly from raw materials. The OFC 06 system is available in two versions: the OFC 06 for soot clad deposition, and the OFC 06 for VAD core deposition.
The OFC 06 for soot clad deposition allows fibre makers to eliminate purchased clad sleeving tubes by depositing the highest-purity synthetic glass directly on the customer�s existing preform core rod. Benefits include lower material and production costs, enhanced fibre geometry with improved cut-off wavelength accuracy and improved proof-test and final-test fibre yields. The OFC 06 for soot clad deposition can be used with fibre maker's existing MCVD cores to produce larger finished fibre preforms, up to 2m long with 1,000km fibre potential. Each OFC 06 for soot clad deposition can produce preforms for 500,000 shipped fibre km per year. The OFC 06 for VAD core deposition is an alternative to the MCVD process for making the preform core rod directly from synthetic glass. Nextrom�s VAD process is optimised for making fully qualified G652.C low-water peak fibre. The VAD process completely eliminates purchased substrate tubes for reduced material and production costs, provides improved index-profile geometry in the fibre core and can produce large core preforms with up to 2,000km fibre potential. Each OFC 06 for VAD core deposition can produce core preforms for 250,000 shipped fibre km per year.
To complement the OFC 06 soot deposition system, Nextrom also offers the OFC 08 soot preform sintering system, also available in two versions: the OFC 08 for soot clad preforms and the OFC 08 for VAD core preforms. The OFC 08 for soot clad preforms converts the clad layer deposited by the OFC 06 from soot to solid high-strength, high-quality cladding glass. The machine can process soot clad preforms up to 2m long with at least 1,000km fibre potential. Depending on the type of fibre and preform size, each OFC 08 for soot clad preforms can produce finished preforms for 334,000 to 500,000 shipped fibre km per year. The OFC 08 for VAD core preforms converts a VAD soot core body produced by the OFC 06 from soot to a solid high-purity core preform. The machine includes special process steps to assure a very low-water peak in the finished fibre, fully compliant with G652.C requirements. The machine can process soot core preforms up to 2m long with at least 2,000km fibre potential. Depending on the type of fibre and preform size each OFC 08 for VAD core preforms can produce core preforms for 334,000 to 500,000 shipped fibre km per year.
