Handling equipment for fibre optic cables
Specialising in the manufacture of heavy-duty handling equipment, Thermoplastics Engineering Corp (TEC), USA, offers an automatic dual reel take-up designed to crossover, cut, and take-up onto a secondary reel at operator specified lengths. This function is carried out at full line speeds with no need for production ramp down. The unit is a 1,000mm parallel axis shaft-style take-up that will handle continuous speeds of up to 500m/min. A heavy-plate, welded steel frame is used to control vibration. Each take-up reel spindle is driven via an independent 20 HP AC motor and 20 HP AC vector drive with encoder feedback, digitally matched at crossover to provide matching surface speed between the full reel and the empty reel prior to the automatic product transfer. All functions of the automatic crossover sequence are handled using an Allen Bradley SLC-500 programmable logic controller. The unit includes heavy-duty guillotine style cut-over mechanism and pneumatic plunger style reel ejector. Floor level reel handling lift tables are included for manual reel loading and unloading with ease. Automatic reel loading and unloading system is available as an option. This unit is capable of running traditional loose tube products with up to 18 fibres contained within as well as Premise style tight-buffer products containing up to 12 fibres and 12 ends of 1,500 dtex aramid yarn.

TEC also offers a compact tight-buffer optical fibre extrusion line. The line is built upon a common base allowing for ease of installation and movement within the plant floor. Various options exist for the line configuration. The pay-off system can be motorised with dancer tensioning or as a simple magnetic brake style. Typical extruder size is 40-45mm and is available with customer preferred crosshead and loading/drying system. A multi-pass, temperature controlled trough system ensures adequate cooling within a short overall length. Diameter measurement equipment is customer specified. A vertical belt wrap style capstan feeds a tendency driven multiple wrap dancer assembly and into a 355mm traversing reel take-up. The control panel can be custom designed either as a discrete control system or with computer driven controls.

TEC also provides the fibre optic industry with complete loose tube extrusion lines, jacketing lines, SZ-cablers, neutralising cabling lines and aramid fibre serving lines (up to 120 end).
