Multi-function device to test insulated wires and switches
Testing electrical cables, insulated wires and switches such as keypads on mobile phones and membrane switches are procedures used by electronics manufacturers in QC and development programmes. Designed specifically for such purposes, the new cable and switch test system from Lloyd Instruments Ltd, UK, is a cost-effective precision-engineered multi-function device that simply plugs into the companys Plus or EZ universal testing machines.

This device is designed to test electrical switch contact resistance, the crush-ability of core cable, and the compressibility of insulated wires. It will also check the integrity of plastic insulation when force is applied and indicate which conductors either shorted together or broke through the outer insulation. This means it checks current flow whilst simultaneously checking compression resistance. A DC power output can also be introduced for other instruments, such as potentiometers or thermocouples, for additional tests such as plotting temperature during testing. Full control is possible through the companys Nexygen MT and Ondio application builder software packages. Operating scripts for Ondio software, written especially by Lloyd Instruments developers, are freely available to customers.
