Single-operator instrument for identifying pairs on telecom cables
Radiodetection Ltd, UK, provides the cable industry with its the new model Teletech TX905 Cablemate, a handheld, single-operator instrument for identifying pairs on telecom cables. This new concept in cable practice dramatically cuts service and installation costs by allowing an unassisted line engineer to disconnect a customer's service, identify the cable pair, open and close the loop and reconnect the customer. The Cablemate kit comprises an oscillator and a signalling probe plus two sets of test leads.

In practice, the service engineer simply connects the oscillator to the cable pair at the exchange cabinet. By pressing Tone, the probe is first used to disconnect the customers service and identify the pair. Adjustable warble tones are available for multiple working. After the pair identification, the probe leads may be connected to the faulty pair and the oscillator signalled by pressing Open or Short buttons, to provide dial or ring-back checks, as well as bridge fault location tests to be performed. After repair or installation, once the Connect Exchange button is pressed, the customers service is restored and the job is complete. For telecom and cable companies, this means that one engineer is in complete control of the entire operation and multiple, time-consuming journeys along the cable are eliminated. With four mode selectable switching, there are no time-out restrictions. The unique signalling system is patented world-wide.
