| Scapa Polymerics, UK, a global supplier of technical tapes and cable materials, now offers a complete range of water swellable tapes and yarns to the global cable industry, as part of its Megotape portofolio of cable tapes. Megotape water swellable tapes are designed to prevent water ingress into, and migration through, fibre optic, copper data/telecom and energy cables. When water enters a cable protected by these tapes, the super absorbent powder (SAP) within the tape instantly forms a water-blocking gel, which practically stops the water where it started, avoiding more costly damage to the cable. Tapes within the Megotape range feature an excellent speed of response to water. All the tapes are under 0.5mm in thickness, yet they can swell up to 50 times their size within just one minute, when brought into contact with water. Megotape water swellable tapes are offered in insulative, semi-conductive, laminated and marine versions to suit the cable application.
As for water blocking filler yarns, these are suitable for use between cable components and are often included in the design of multiple core copper or aluminium power and signal cables. With yarns, the SAP is distributed in a uniform process that ensures the yarn stays tight and maintains a smooth look. Yarns will swell to approximately 3 times their dry size.
Scapa Polymerics also offers woven fire-retardant, semi-conductive, insulative, and bitumenised tapes as part of the Megotape product family. Other tapes include PIB and EPR self-amalgamating tapes, PVC tapes and impregnated paper tapes.
