| Certified ISO 9001, AEI Compounds Ltd, UK, a division of the TT Group PLC, manufactures a wide range of cross-linkable polymers for sheathing and insulation within the cable and wire industry, for applications as diverse as aerial cables, semi-conducting compounds for electrostatic screens, and compounds for automotive wiring. In recent years, the company has diversified into other product areas, particularly where improved thermal stability is a requirement. The company also pioneered the development of highly effective flame-retardant materials that provide the protection of conventional thermoplastic elastomers, at much lower cost. AEI Compounds complete portfolio of core products today also includes fire-retardant, ultra-violet stabilised, semi-conducting and tracking-resistant compounds.
The company has a commanding lead in the development of high-temperature compounds which it supplies to the cable and wire industry for use in a host of insulation and sheathing applications, from under-bonnet automotive wiring to sheathing for fibre optic cables. All AEI products comply with stringent national and international standards.
AEI Compounds has also worked closely with the construction industry, developing an innovative halogen-free flame retardant low-smoke and fume cable compound. Unlike other flame retardant sheathing materials such as PVC, the AEI Compounds SX 538 will not give off copious amounts of smoke or acidic fumes when it burns. Yet, at the same time, it exhibits all the proven benefits of traditional insulating materials. The SX 538, which conforms to BS 7211 and Cenelec HD22.9 S2 for building wires, answers an increasing need for safe, low-smoke and fume cable insulation for heavily populated areas. This compound is also suitable for a range of other heavy industrial applications including mining and quarrying. The material highlights good abrasion resistance and excellent wet electrical properties. It is also available in a special grade for sheathing optical fibre cables in most hostile environments.
The company also offers its SX 541, a high-temperature, flame-retardant compound that has been specially developed for heavy industry and engineering applications. The compound is designed to provide high-effective sheathing protection for cables in the toughest of environments. SX 541 can be processed in exactly the same way as non-curable thermoplastic compounds, ensuring highly efficient at normal production rates. It is also highly versatile and may be used in other applications, including injection compounds.
