In-process FFT spectrum analysis and SRL prediction
The transmission characteristics of data and RF cables are most thoroughly described by the cable's structural return loss (SRL). Typically, SRL is measured as a function of cable operating frequencies at the finished cable. With respect to SRL drop-outs, periodic cable parameter fluctuations are most critical. In the extrusion process, such variations might result from extruder "pumping", imbalances of rotating parts, periodic line speed fluctuations, cyclic fluctuations in the foaming process, or periodic conductor pre-heating non-uniformity.

Designed for quality control of (foam insulated) coaxial cables as well as data Cat. 5, Cat. 6 and Cat. 7 cables, Sikora Industrieelektronik GmbH, Germany, provides the data and RF-cable industry with its recently developed devices LASER 2000XY (XY diameter gauge heads), CAPACITANCE 2000 (multi-zone capacitance measuring tubes) and CENTERVIEW 2000 (non-contact eccentricity/diameter systems) which provide in-process FFT spectrum analysis as well as SRL prediction, to detect these unwanted effects. Sikora's all digital FFT analysis and prediction of the structural return loss SRL is calculated directly inside the gauge heads. Consequently at the capacitance measuring system, the noise level (grass) is due to the signal processing as low as 0.003pF/m (Picofarad per meter). In practice, this means that the Sikora system allows for reliable detections of SRL peaks connected with periodic capacitance fluctuations having a magnitude of less than 0.01pF/m, for all cables used, at an operating frequency of up to 5GHz.

FFT/SRL data are accessible via a diagnosis interface with a PC or note-book and most comfortable with the processor unit ECOCONTROL 2000, which includes a TFT-colour monitor for a brilliant display and a touch screen for easy operation.
